BE THOUGHTFUL
When sending a greeting card to a cancer patient, it’s a good idea to include a pre-paid phone calling card, as many hospitals and treatment centers don’t allow cell phone usage in the rooms. Hospital phones can rack up quite an extra bill on top of other expenses.
You could also include gift certificates for gas (if the family has to drive to the treatment center, this can be a big expense), or groceries (if the store does home delivery, that’s a plus), house cleaning service, on-line retail stores, or restaurants near the home or treatment center (especially if they deliver).
If you think a gift certificate wouldn’t be appropriate but you still want to help, write an IOU and include it in the card if you can assist with chores like picking up the kids from school or driving them to after-school activities, picking up prescriptions, mowing the lawn, cooking dinner, accompanying the patient to treatment, etc.
Pediatric cancer patients will appreciate gift certificates for on-line stores for music, books, games, DVD rental, or fast food restaurants. Just be sure the gift is age-appropriate.
